Motivation
In our case the issue is that we have multiple versions of our app deployed (6.1, 7.0, etc.).When a patch is requested, we need to recreate the environment used for that particular version.
For example, we had a release 6.1 that was based on ember-cli 3.1.2, node 10, etc. Now, our current release is using ember octane with node 12, etc.
We cannot rebuild the version 6.1 with our current environment. Node is conflicting with ember requirements and so on.
Based on our readings this is when Docker is supposed to help.
Most of the references out there are for setting up a server or tests but nothing really describing our scenario. The best documentation came from Dan Lynn:
Steps
Install Docker Desktop
Installing Docker Desktop seems to be the best option. It installs Engine, CLI Client, Compose, and a bunch of other things (that we dont really need but we don't care).
Prepare the repo for runing in Docker (Dockerize)
We basically had to add two files to our repo (see files below):
- Dockerfile: Define the app's environment for the container.
- docker-compose.yml: Compose is a tool for defining and running multi-container Docker applications. In our case, we are not really using it for its multi-container feature but rather as a simple way to capture the configuration for our ember application service.
We also added in our package.json a series of scripts related to docker.
Issue we faced
Initially, when we were trying to build or serve, we would get an 'out of heap memory'.It seems that Ember is really requesting a lot of memory.
The key to solve this issue for us was:
- In docker desktop, we boosted the memory resources to 8Gb
- in the docker-compose.yml, we added under the service embercontainer:
Will Watchmen Get A Season 2? Watchmen Season 2 News, Release ...
The second issue/discovery/leasson learned is that if we changed a reference in the package.json, we had to stop everything and call docker-compose build
to force the re-provisioning of the container. This is not something that is done often but something to remember.
